Audio Books - Have You Tried Them?

Have you listened to a good audio book lately? Rather than read a novel, why not listen to one? You can listen to an audio book whilst commuting to and from work, jogging, or participating in any other activity in which you have brain capacity to spare and would like to make better use of your time.

Audio books can be used to educate and entertain, just like their written counterparts. They are available in more or less every topic including Arts & Drama, Biography, Business, Crime & Thrillers, Fiction, Foreign Language Study, Health & Recreation, History, Humor, Juvenile, Radio Shows, Religion & Spiritual, Self Help, and TV & Film. Audio books are often much cheaper than printed books, particularly if they are purchased as digital downloads.

So, what is an audio book? Well, it's just an audio file (MP3 or WAV) that is stored and played on devices such as MP3 players, iPods, computers, and even cell phones (mobile phones). You can also burn the file to audio CD and then play it on your home Hi-Fi or pop it into your in-car audio system and, of course, your computer's CD drive.

How do audio books differ from other MP3 or WAV files, then? In essence, they are no different to song files or podcasts downloaded in these formats. Instead of a song playing, a narrator reads a book.

How can you be sure that audio books are for you? You will only find out by giving it a try. And just like there is no guarantee that you will like the paperback novel bought from your local bookstore, there is no guarantee that you will like the audio version either. But before you spend your hard earned money on an audio book, do some research and find merchants who allow you to listen to (long) samples of your chosen audio book title and offer a money back guarantee. Yes, these merchants do exist! There is nothing more frustrating than to purchase an audio book only to find out that the narrator's voice is monotonous, or the story is told without passion.

When purchasing audio books via the Internet, you might purchase them as physical products, e.g. a CD shipped to your home or office. However, it is more convenient to purchase an audio book as a digital download, if you have a fast Internet connection such as broadband. You get your audio book delivered 'immediately' and avoid problems like the product being lost in the post. As a rough guide, expect 1 hour's high quality content to result in a file size of around 60MB. This should only take a few minutes to download on a moderately faster broadband connection; if you only have dial-up Internet access, it will take considerably longer.

So, the next time you're taking a walk in the park, are on a long and boring train journey to work, exercising, cooking, gardening, or just chilling out, why not listen to a good novel? Remember how you enjoyed your teacher reading you a story at school, or your parents reading you a bedtime story? I am sure you do.

Profits of Using VoIP - Internet Broadband Phone Services

Recently, my neighbor asked me about how to call international long distance with a no-minute charge. He also was interested in learning how to lower his home phone bill. I told him about a phone system called VoIP that would benefit his interest. This article is a brief information to introduce VoIP to you.

First, do you know how many people are using VoIP services? Here are interesting numbers... In 2007 there were almost 65 million worldwide voip subscribers. In the USA, over 16 million US VoIP subscribers, with continue to grow 6-8 million new subscribers every year, about 24 million US VoIP subscribers expected by 2008. By 2010 , US VoIP Subscribers will reach 44 millions, and the number of worldwide subscribers is predicted to rise to over 197 millions.

So what is VoIP - VoIP is standing for " Voice over Internet Protocol ". VoIP also is referred to as Internet Telephony, IP Telephony, or Voice over the Internet, VoIP Telephone, Broadband Telephony, Broadband Phone, Voice over Broadband, or simply Internet Phone.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a protocol optimized for the transmission of voice through the Internet or other switched networks. It's described as the transmission of voice traffic over IP-based networks, a unique technology that allows us to make calls using a broadband Internet connection ( through broadband modem ) instead of a regular (analog) phone line. At first, the Internet Protocol (IP) was originally designed for data networking systems. Later, with its success in data networking field and the explosion of Internet Era, the IP has been developed in voice networking and nowadays it is bringing us the most profit in this field. VoIP has become more and more popular because of the cost advantages to consumers compares to traditional telephone networks.

A brief explanation on how does VOIP work? - The traditional phone system is using analog phone signals to deliver and receive calls, with VoIP system, it's using digital signals that can be sent over the Internet. If you have quality Internet connection - DSL (digital subscriber line), described as High Speed Internet Service which makes fast Internet connection ) you can get phone service delivered through your Internet connection instead of from your local phone company. In basics, here is how system works:

PC to PC: Computer connects to Broadband Modem connects to Internet connects to Broadband Modem connects to Computer

PC to Phone: Computer connects to Broadband Modem connects to Internet connects to Telephone Network connects to Telephone

Phone to Phone ( using Router ): Telephone connects to Phone Adaptor connects to Router connects to Broadband Modem connects to Internet connects to Telephone Network connects to Telephone

Benefits of using VoIP: There are two major reasons to use VoIP: Low Cost and More Profits

Low Cost: Phone services via VoIP costs less than equivalent services from analog systems. With the traditional analog phone services, users pay a flat monthly fee for the service, and pay other fee for long distance call service plus per-minute charge. With VoIP, the users who already have High Speed Internet service (DSL), can take advantage by using VoIP over this service - Many VoIP Service Providers allow you enjoy unlimited in-network calling - it means you can call any other in-network customer without charge. Other companies allow you to call any number, including local, long distance, mobile, and international numbers. For International calling, the users who using VoIP can get big savings with lower rates. Depends on each VoIP service offer, you can enjoy unlimited calling worldwide to many destinations for a flat monthly fee with no minute charge or low rates.

More Profits - Compares to analog phone networks, VoIP has more advantage functions. You can make calls from your personal computer to other's computer or other's regular phone, or you can make calls directly from your regular phone to other's regular phone. Besides, The digital signals let you enjoy high quality voice and many advantage services such as Voice Mail, Caller ID, 3-Way Calling, Call Waiting, Speed Dial, Repeat Dial, Do Not Disturb, Call Forwarding, Emergency 911 Service, Online Account Management, Virtual Calling Card, access the service to your cell phone...

Further more, Incoming phone calls are automatically routed to your VoIP phone where ever you plug it into the network, so you can take your VoIP phone with you on a trip, around the world - anywhere you can connect it to the High Speed Internet, you can call and receive your incoming calls anytime. The VoIP Router can be set up anywhere with High Speed Internet, it provides you the advantage of savings. For example, a VoIP provider allows you get the US number and connect the router outside of the US. So when you call to that number, just like you call locals, and the person who is in other country calls you by using this service (connected through router) just pay a very small charge per minute, or sometimes it's free.

Digital Transcription Service

People have less and less time. Have you ever sat down at your desk first thing in the morning and write yourself a long list of things you need to do that day? I often find that I never manage to finish my list by home time. The same is true for all businesses; deadlines are often broken with not enough time to get jobs completed. In a world where time is so valuable, it can be a great advantage to have an extra pair of hands. This is where the services of a digital transcription company can come in really useful.

Digital audio transcription is the process of converting digital audio files into transcripts for companies without the time of manpower to do so. The companies using the service can vary widely, from medical to law, building to insurance, entertainment to IT, the list goes on and on. By saving yourself time with outsourcing your digital audio transcriptions to a professional transcription company you will be free to do other things like finish off that list of things to do.

Digital transcription has certain types of files which are used in the process. These files vary and can consist of the following.

1) WAV - Also known as WAVE files. One of the first audio files developed for use with the PC. The problem with these files is that it is very large, which is not so much of a problem with broadband speeds, but this file is not used so much as a consequence.

2) MP3 - Compressed WAV file often used in music. A lot of digital recorders allow you to record in MP3 format as well. The WAV file can be shrunk down to 12th of its original size.

3) WMA - Windows Media Audio files. These files were developed for Windows Media Player, which comes with all Windows based PCs. These files are even more compressed than an MP3 - about one 36th of the size of a WAV file.

The types of transcriptions which will come on these formats can range from Police interviews to teleconferences and everything in-between.

Beware of Unlimited Bandwidth - The Catch Behind Web Hosting...

To have your website perform well under major traffic, you need a huge amount of bandwidth. Bandwidth is simply the amount of data that can be downloaded or transmitted over an internet connection. Therefore, when you are building a website or choosing a web hosting company, make sure the company provides enough bandwidth for your website.

There are many providers out there but which one provides the genuine bandwidth that will deliver performance to your website? Some companies out there even promises unlimited bandwidth if you choose their services. To be honest, if you come across these ads that claim that they provide unlimited bandwidth, you can just forget about these companies because there is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth. These companies are just trying to attract you and lure you into signing up with their hosting plans. The so-called unlimited bandwidth is only a trick. After you eventually sign up with these companies, they will inform you that you will have to pay additional fees when you exceed your limit. This is the so-called unlimited bandwidth. You pay for whatever extra bandwidth you use.

So, if your pocket has unlimited cash, you really can enjoy unlimited bandwidth.

The only way to have unlimited bandwidth is to have you own broadband company. If not, there is no way a web hosting company provides unlimited bandwidth. Among the experienced that we have with customers that sign up with an unlimited bandwidth, customers finds that their website is not running after they sign up with the companies. When they ask for a refund, the company would just turn to 'legal mean'.

When they do that, customers will have no choice but to accept the fact in the terms of service, the one detail where customers always fail to study properly. In the end, the company does not have any reason to refund the customers.

In any case that you may encounter a company that provides unlimited bandwidth, make sure that you read the terms of service properly. Better safe than sorry. The better solution is to determine how much bandwidth that you will need for your website. To do that, you need to estimate the amount of visitors that you expect will visit your website daily, the amount of pages that you visitors will browse through and the size of the codes on your website. Once you have that figured out, you will roughly know how much bandwidth that you need. So, you won't actually have to go for an unlimited bandwidth after all.

If you are looking for an affordable web hosting service that offer unlimited bandwidth, perhaps you should check out Hostmonster hosting. At the time of writing, they are offering "unlimited bandwidth and disk storage space" with just about $6 per month.

Wonder if their offer is for real?

Well then you have to review Hostmonster service and compare Hostmonster hosting packages with other web host.

Broadband - What Speed Do You Need?

There are a wide range of deals that the leading broadband providers are offering customers. There are so many that customers do not often know which one to choose with varying speeds at various costs available.

The connection speed required depends on what you plan to use the internet for. A 1MB connection is suitable for someone who uses their internet primarily for email and general surfing. However, if you want to stream music videos or download your favourite films then you will need speeds of 1Mb to 5Mb.

Modern technology has allowed more than one person in a house to surf the internet at the same time. This has made things a lot easier as fighting for the home computer is now a thing of the past. However, if like many other families, you have more than one person using the internet you will need faster broadband.

Broadband speeds vary and your internet activity will dictate the speeds you require. Playing video games and watching high quality videos will certainly require faster connection speeds. The area of residence plays a big part in the speeds you are able to receive. The broadband speed test allows you to get a good understanding of what speeds you should be expecting from you deal.

Deals will vary depending on the provider but one thing to ensure is the amount of data you are allowed to download will be sufficient enough. This is the most common way of customers receiving extra charges as they choose the cheaper broadband deals that do not cover them. Unlimited downloads are very popular and for a extra small fee, it eliminate the chances of you getting a nasty surprise when your monthly bill arrives.

With a wide range of options available, customers should search online for the best deals around as comparing the leading providers can ensure you get the best package for you.

To ensure you receive the highest broadband quality, ensure your internet speeds are sufficient enough for your requirements. The broadband speed test allows you to see the expected speeds for your area. Find the best broadband deals online and surf your way to the best deals.

10 Things You Didn't Know About Connecting For Health

Connecting for Health is the countrywide IT programme for improving the NHS (National Health Service). The NHS is improving its healthcare and efficiency by implementing advanced computer systems and communication technology to provide a better service and more effective patient care.

1. Connecting for Health is currently the world's largest civil IT programme and Connecting for Health is improving efficiency and effectiveness in all areas of information sharing and record keeping in the NHS. Connecting for health will ensure that the medical records of all 60 million NHS patients in the UK are stored electronically.

2. Connecting for Health will improve all aspects of patient care, such as allowing a dentist to see what medication a patient has been prescribed by their GP, or whether the patient has recently undergone an operation. Patient records can be accessed and transferred within a few seconds, rather than the days or even weeks for this information to be between departments before the Connecting for Health programme.

3. The Connecting for Health Choose and Book system allows GPs and patients to decide the best time and place for their appointment, with a choice of at least 4 hospitals. Doctors can help decide the most appropriate hospital based on the patient's needs, meaning that appointments are now much more convenient. If the patient's circumstances change, the appointment can be changed or cancelled online, or via telephone, which will dramatically reduce the number of people who don't turn up for their appointment. Choose and Book means that patients no longer need to wait weeks for their appointments. Up to 24 000 patients a day are choosing the most convenient time and location for their appointment thanks to Choose and Book.

4. The Electronic Prescriptions Service (EPS) system will allow every doctor's surgery to send patients' prescriptions directly to pharmacies. Patients can also have their prescription sent to a pharmacy of their choice. As EPT progresses, paper prescriptions will be phased out. Currently around 70% of prescriptions are repeat prescriptions. Connecting for Health also means that patients don't need to visit their doctor's surgery to obtain a prescription for their medication. Currently, around 1.5 million electronic prescriptions a week are received from GPs.

5. As well as the benefits for GPs, hospital staff will see enormous improvements. For example, the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) allow images such as X-rays and ultrasound scans to be stored digitally and so available immediately, no matter where they are needed. Previously, according to the NHS, up to 1 in 5 X-Rays went missing.

6. Over 15 000 staff undertake a rigorous training and registration programme, every month, so they can have secure access to more information about the patients in their care.

7. One of the priorities of the Connecting for Health programme is to make sure that the NHS meets current and future staff and patient requirements. Computers and IT are increasingly used on wards and electronic patient records are rapidly replacing handwritten bundles of notes.

8. The National Network for the NHS (N3) broadband network connects all NHS locations, and other locations that provide NHS care together. Data and Images such as X-rays and scans can now be transferred between hospitals in seconds. Previously if patient records or scans were needed, they would often have had to be delivered by courier or taxi.

9. Thanks to the impressive broadband system, Voice Over IP (VOIP) telephone calls are can now be made. This means that phone calls between departments, hospitals and other NHS locations are free. This massive cost saving, combined with reduced call rates from landline to mobile phones, will save over £20m according to the Connecting for Health N3 programme director.

10. Patients who change their doctor have their notes transferred within seconds, rather than the usual 6 weeks or more. As well as being more efficient, patient data is much more secure, and less likely to get lost in transit.

Connecting For Health is moving along rapidly, and providing better care than ever for patients, better and more appropriate systems and procedures for medical staff, and saving the NHS over £120 million each year.

SYstem C is heavily involved in the Connecting for Health programme, and works alongside NHS Trusts and Local Service Providers. Find out more about Healthcare Systems designed for the NHS National Programme for IT (NPfIT) designed to benefit both the patients and staff.

  12. Who regulates VoIP services?
  13. What are the computer system requirements for VoIP?
  14. Are free trials normally available?
  15. How can I improve the sound quality?

1. What is VoIP and what does it stand for?

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol and it allows you to place telephone calls over a data network like the internet. It operates by converting your voice signal from your telephone into a digital signal that can then be transmitted over the Internet. The digital signal is then converted at the other end back to a voice signal that the other party can hear. When you use a phone with an adapter the calls are placed just like a regular telephone. You first hear a dial tone then the call is made. You are also able to place a call directly from your computer using a conventional telephone or microphone.

2. How do I make a VoIP phone call?

Making a VoIP phone call is no different from using a regular land line telephone. You pickup the receiver and listen for the dial tone. You can then dial your number as you always have in the past. The call connects to your high-speed Internet connection and travels to your local telephone company's equipment to a VoIP provider which transport the signal through the Internet to the local provider of the party you are calling. They relay the signal to your parties telephone. As an alternative, you may also place the call using your computer's hardware and software, entering the number through your keyboard. The signal is then sent through your cable modem to your local telephone carrier.

3. What equipment do I need for VoIP phone calls?

Your existing incoming high-speed Internet connection should be sufficient but the higher the connectivity the better the signal.

In terms of hardware, you can hook up an inexpensive microphone to your computer or connect a phone directly to a VoIP telephone adaptor (ATA). Or you can use a phone specially made to work with Internet Voice. This is called an SIP Phone. Each SIP phone is a network endpoint, and voice is routed via its IP address. It allows a DID (direct inward dialing) number to move with a user. You can move, add or remove stations and never have to call your interconnect/PBX service company. SIP phones also allow full use of advanced features like voice mail to e-mail and auto attendant.

4. Are there any differences between making a local call or a long distance call?

There are many different calling available for VoIP. The calling rates and fixed plans will vary from one vendor to another depending on the service you select. Please make sure to read all of the fine print associated with any plan that you choose.

One thing to keep in mind, however, is that VoIP can blur the difference between local and long distance by issuing a local number for your Internet phone. This allows you to make LOCAL calls to your home area code from that phone, regardless of where you are geographically. All you need is an Internet connection to plug in your phone, it doesn't matter what Internet provider you use, and you can call your local area code from anywhere in the world without paying long distance rates.

5. Who can I call if I am using a VoIP service?

Your calls can be made to any local telephone number, mobile phone, long distance number, or any international number. You may even use the service to speak with more than one person at a time. More importantly, the person you are calling does not need any special equipment; just a regular telephone.

6. Are there any advantages in using VoIP phone service?

If you are using a broadband internet connection, you don't need to maintain and pay the additional cost for a regular land line just to make telephone calls. With VoIP you're able to talk to many people at the same time. You can set up conference calls with your colleagues, staff, family and friends. VoIP allows you to reduce interconnect/PBX fees by enabling you to add, move and remove stations from your network without calling your service provider. In addition, you don't have to buy an expensive phone switch to set up your network. VoIP also offers many advanced calling features from caller ID and call forward to voicemail and distinctive ringing to call tracing and reminder calls, among many others. You can also manage your features through the Internet; log-in and customize services that normally you would have to rely on your provider to change - for a fee of course. Voice over Internet can lower long-distance fees by assigning a local telephone number to your VoIP phone. You will then be able to take your phone anywhere in the world, plug it into any broadband connection regardless of specific provider, and you can make LOCAL calls to your home area code. Parents can keep in touch with children at college; churches can contact missionaries all over the world; and businesses can connect branch offices in different cities.

7. Will I be able to dial 911 emergency services?

Some Internet Voice services have difficulty seamlessly connecting with the 911 dispatch center or identifying the location of Internet Voice 911 callers. Check with your local VoIP provider to determine if they can provide this service in your area.

8. Will I be able to use my computer while making a VoIP phone call?

Yes you most certainly will be able to use your computer while making calls on your VoIP network.

9. Will I be able to take my phone adapter with me while traveling?

You should be able to use your VoIP service wherever you travel as long as you have a high-speed Internet connection available. Your adaptor should work the same as when you are at home or in the office as long as you have access to a high-speed Internet connection.

10. Does my computer need to be running in order to use VoIP service?

Your computer does not need to be turned on but your broadband connection must be active in order for VoIP to functionproperly. However, if you are not using an adapter and choose to use a microphone or headset with your computer then your computer must be on.

11. How will I know when I receive a phone call over my VoIP service?

Your VoIP phone will ring like any other telephone.

12. Who regulates VoIP services?

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has worked to create an environment promoting competition and innovation tobenefit consumers. Historically, the FCC has not regulated the Internet or the services provided over it. On February 12, 2004, the FCC found that an entirely Internet-based VoIP service was an unregulated information service. On the same day, the FCC began a broader proceeding to examine what its role should be in this new environment of increased consumer choice and what it can best do to meet its role of safeguarding the public interest. In November 2004 they ruled that States do not have the jurisdiction to impose taxes on VoIP services, another victory for the consumer.

13. What are the computer system requirements for VoIP?

The specific requirements of any VoIP system must be checked with each individual VoIP provider.

14. Are free trials normally available?

You need to check with your selected VoIP provider to determine if a free trial is available. Most VoIP providers will provide some kind of free trial or conditional free trial period. If you are dissatisfied for any reason you should return the equipment in their original packing boxes together with all shipping paperwork and packing slips to ensure they will honor their warrantee.

14. Will I be able to use VoIP behind a firewall?

You need to ask your network administrator regarding any special setting that are required to function through the firewall.

15. How can I improve the sound quality?

  • Speak with a headset instead of a microphone. Better still, use a phone with an adaptor.
  • If you are using a microphone, hold it away from the speakers to avoid having the sound from your speakers recirculate into your microphone causing feedback.
  • Lower the volume on your speakers.
  • Check with your sound card manufacturer to be sure you are using the latest drivers.
  • Use a direct phone jack. A split line or extension cord between your phone jack and computer can distort the sound causing an echo.

How to Sell High Tech Solutions

Many companies are looking to improve upon the speed, security, and accessibility of business technologies, especially satellite and broadband connections to the internet. While customers are becoming more savvy, many don’t speak ‘tech-ese,’ and they still are baffled by terms such as routers, IPSEC, T-1s, WIFI, and broadband. While these buyers may have a genuine interest and need for the products they investigate, more often than not their sales experience ends up a frustrating and confusing one.

Don't Talk Tech!

Salespeople are often caught in the hype for their own products. It’s easy to lose touch with a client’s perspective with this approach. The other major blunder a tech salesperson may make is their need to be perceived as experts in their field. Talking tech to the point of no return does not usually yield a promising sale. How does one handle the tendency in tech sales to “show up and throw up?” It is critical to address ineffective sales approaches in the tech market, because these mistakes are often the most significant barriers to high performance.

Communicate Don't Baffle

Bringing the human side to selling high tech products is not easy, but it must enter into the equation or else a salesperson’s success is at risk. Communicating with clients, not baffling them, is key to building long-term relationships. Technology is evolving, and the customer needs to become aware of the new technology and not be intimidated by it.

Focus on Client Needs

I conduct high technology sales training throughout the United States for a variety of clients. For sales professionals in the high tech field, I often stress the need to shift the focus from the salesperson to the client. This is difficult, because products are complex, and sales people get caught up in the innovation and creativity the product may provide rather than focusing on the client’s needs. Typically, a salesperson approaches the client with a laundry list of questions or a lengthy Powerpoint presentation. Sometimes the questions are canned, or the presentation is a reflection of the salesperson’s agenda. The questions or presentation are designed to steer the conversation towards the highlights of the products for sale or the expertise of the salesperson.

Turn the Tone from an Interview to a Conversation

Instead of assuming knowledge of the client’s needs, I recommend a salesperson begin the first meeting by asking the client about their expectations. I also advise them to cancel the list of leading questions. Replace this with a list of results the client desires and their potential business challenges. Shifting the focus from the salesperson to the client will change the tone of the meeting from an interview to a conversation.

Ask the Right Questions

The art of selling is still about asking good questions. They simply must be framed with a different purpose. Try building in questions that put the client in the driver’s seat. For example, ‘What would you like to learn more about?’ or “How can I help resolve these issues?’ These questions can generate a host of answers that relate back to the product and the solutions technology offers.

Shortened presentations that focus on companies’ capabilities and how to expand them through technology help close deals. Info dumps are a bore and can even damage the sale process because the customer is not engaged. If high tech salespeople lose themselves in touting the capabilities of the product, they lose their most distinguishing feature – themselves.

Computer Problems. How Do You Avoid Them?

I see Danny Burke of PC Magic once a month to sort out any problems on my computer and to help me move ahead with an internet info product business.

Danny spends most of his week rescuing business owners who are having problems with their computers.

Last week I asked him for the advice he would give a business owner who was having trouble with his computer. This is the advice he gave me:

Keep things simple on your computer. Don’t use it for games etc. Just use it for business. Danny finds that half his customers have caused their own problems by the extras they have downloaded from the internet such as:

Additional toolbars for internet explorer.
Unnecessary utilities like internet speed boosters which seldom work.
Eye candy such as wall paper changers, animated cats etc

All most businesses need is

A base operating system
An email client
A web browser
An office suite
A firewall and anti-virus system

Don’t download any old stuff off the internet. The more stuff you put on your hard disk, the more likely it is that you will have problems. Microsoft cannot check all the different applications you might download for compatibility.

Your first graphics package and another graphics package might fight over the file extensions. Try to stick with one package. Similar problems occur with music and video players which should not be on a business system anyway unless you are in that field.

Don’t upgrade unless you could name three good reasons to upgrade. After Danny gave me this advice, I rather guiltily tried to upgrade my BT broadband service to the new combined BT Yahoo broadband service.

Sure enough as soon as I had installed the new service, things started to go wrong. Things that had worked before (like links in emails) no longer worked. I’m not blaming BT Yahoo. I just had too much stuff on my computer! When I uninstalled the new service everything started working again.

Danny comments: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” When you upgrade, the file formats are sometimes different from the earlier versions of the software. This means you cannot go back to the earlier versions because they don’t recognise the new file format.

Do not assume that newer versions are better than the earlier versions. All you have done is make the software producer richer!

Have a firewall and virus checker and keep them up to date

Back up your data. 90% of companies who have a catastrophic data loss go bankrupt within two years. You should have two copies of important data and three copies of critical data stored in three different locations.

One copy should be in a fire safe off site. This should be standard practice. You cannot trust computers. Sooner or later they will get you! If you don’t back up, you are an idiot and deserve all you get!

Today I received this message from an ezine owner:

A lot of you sent me an ad this week, which
I had saved on my hard drive and guess
what?

My computer crashed and I lost every one.

I have a backup computer, but no ads.

Please re-send your ads so I can get them in
the Friday edition.

Sorry for the trouble.

The ezine owner is obviously a nice person but he may lose customers who haven’t got the time to resend their ads. No one likes to repeat their efforts.

Maybe his computer crashed because he had broken not only the back up rule but some of the other rules.

As a general principle, use your machine and don’t tinker with it. Once it is working, leave it alone!

Leave it alone!!!

The Purpose of Broadband Comparison

Why would anyone want to take the time to conduct a broadband comparison? Aren't all broadband providers essentially the same? That's the mistake many people make when they are seeking a broadband provider. They assume that all providers offer the same services at approximately the same price. It's essential to know what you are getting before you agree to that service.

One important thing you want to check is download speed. If you do a great deal of downloading, this is going to make a difference. Some broadband providers allow web space while others do not. There are many differences between providers which is why it's important to do a broadband comparison before you make a final decision concerning a broadband provider. Some providers include free virus protection which can save you quite a bit of money each year in either product of subscription renewal costs.

Is there a best way to conduct a broadband comparison? If you have never done a broadband comparison, you will need to know how to search and compare different aspects of each broadband provider's business and home broadband services. The best way to make a broadband comparison is to make a list of what you expect from a broadband provider. When you have your list of expectations, you are then able to research potential providers to find out which ones come closest to your expectations.

It is not likely when you conduct your broadband connection that you will find one service provider that meets all of your expectations. You may have to take the time to compare services and decide what is the most important to you and move forward from there. Of course, when a business is doing a broadband comparison it is essential that they find a provider that can offer all of the services they need. The difference is that most providers will customize services under a business account whereas home broadband is pretty much a package deal with very little customization possible.

When you take the time to do a broadband comparison, you know before you sign up with the service what to expect in terms of service and offerings. Instead of choosing a broadband provider on speculation, you will be making an informed decision based on research and comparison. You would not choose a mobile phone provider without checking the services each one provides nor should you do so with a broadband provider. There are many broadband providers throughout the UK. Whether you want ADSL or cable broadband, you want to do a broadband comparison and select carefully. Failure to take the time to select the right broadband provider can cost extra money when you cancel your service and choose another provider. Not only do you face the possibility of a contract cancellation fee if you've chosen an annual plan, but you also may have to pay another set up and installation fee as well. If you take extra time to choose carefully the first time you will not have to worry about such trivia.

VoIP: Finally Worth a Look

Dear Internet Friends,

Hundreds of thousands of consumers collectively save millions of dollars each month by replacing (or supplementing) their traditional telephone service with personal voice over IP (VoIP) telephony.

Using IP to transmit voice is not new. Large corporations and long distance carriers have used IP to transmit voice on their private networks for years. Likewise, private citizens have used their computers and the Internet to talk with other PC users for a few years now, but in the past users of such solutions have had to contend with poor voice quality and the need for at least one computer to be connected to the Internet.

Widespread adoption of broadband Internet service (cable or DSL) in the last few years though has in turn fueled a surge in the growth of much-improved personal VoIP

Most VoIP service providers offer all-inclusive calling plans that provide you with unlimited local, regional and long distance (within the United States) at flat rates starting as low as $24.95 per month. Some offer usage-based plans at a lower monthly cost and most provide inexpensive per minute rates on international calls as well. In addition, VoIP service providers include a smorgasbord of advanced features such as name and number caller ID, call forwarding, call blocking and voice mail that traditional phone companies sell as premium services.

When you sign up for VoIP service, many service providers give you the option of choosing the area code, and possibly the exchange, for your service. You can select from any area where the VoIP provider has local service.

So what are the drawbacks of a personal VoIP solution? The main drawback is the need for a reliable broadband connection; without one a VoIP solution is probably not for you.

Power outages present another hurdle. Since VoIP requires a live Internet connection, losing electricity means losing your phone service.

The voice quality of your VoIP call is also another consideration. Since the data travels across the Internet, there's the potential for dropouts or "burbles" similar to what you might experience on a cell phone

Most people we called during our tests were surprised at the quality of the calls, and didn't realize they were on a VoIP connection until we told them. Keep in mind that the call quality for VoIP providers who don't manage their IP networks and depend on the Internet for routing will yield varying and sometimes disappointing voice quality and unreliable connections.

Laptop Computers and the PVP Effect!

Roll over lumbering desktop computers, the limber laptop is here, and it's here to stay! For a while now notebooks have outstripped their ageing desktop PC siblings, easily winning the gold medal in the computer sales olympics. We will illustrate how the PVP effect has contributed greatly to the increase in popularity of notebook computers.

(P) Portability:

Firstly it may be stating the obvious, but people buy laptops because they can take them anywhere. Office workers need no more be confined to their claustrophophic cubicles. Instead those statistic charts and data reports can be compiled on a train, in the comfort of an arm chair, or even on the beach! Portability equals flexibility, but alas this hasn't always been the case. Todays ultra portable laptop computers have a come along way since the bulky, sewing machine sized machines of the late seventies and early eighties. Indeed one of the first portable computers was built by IBM, and this machine (IBM 5100) weighed in at a hefty 50lbs! Today's corridor warriors would have trouble lugging that puppy from meeting to meeting, unless of course they subjected themselves to an intensive dose of steroids :)

(V) Value:

In the seventies the aforementioned IBM 5100 would have set you back a staggering 20,000 dollars. Today a top of the range IBM Thinkpad can be bought for around 3000 dollars. Cheaper Thinkpads can often be obtained for well under a thousand dollars, especially if you don't mind purchasing a used or refurbished model.

(P) Performance:

Many laptops today come fitted with Centrino processors which offer superb performance and improved battery life. What is Centrino I hear you ask? Well this is Intel's name for their new notebook technology that combines their Pentium M processor, 855 chipset and the Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 WiFi 802.11 network interface. Laptops fitted with these processors are usually lighter because of the smaller components used.

Couple this attractive feature with wireless networking technology and you have a powerful technological package. Wi-Fi is short for "Wireless Fidelity" and it's usage is growing quickly amongst home users, office workers, even coffee shops. If you enter Wi-Fi areas with a properly equipped notebook, you can access the Internet at broadband speeds.

Tom Fox writes for the The Laptops Weblog, a web site providing information and articles related to notebook computers.

A Cheap Alternative To Broadband?

Are you a dial-up user looking for a faster connection,
but don't like Broadband prices? If so, you should take a look at a new service called OnSpeed, which has received rave reviews in Internet technology publications.

What OnSpeed does is to re-route web pages and email via
its own servers, compressing the data on the fly prior to sending it onwards to your PC. A small program then decompresses the data, so that you can view it in the normal way via your browser or email client.

In my own dial-up tests, with a modem running at a nominal
49kb/s I appeared to get speeds close to that of my normal
broadband connection of 598 kb/s - very impressive. Image quality is often reduced but the compression for this can be improved, though with an adverse effect on the speed of course.

Some file types like MP3 also cannot yet be compressed. The
company is working on these issues however and expects to
find solutions soon.

Unfortunately I was unable to use email in my tests, due
to a 'port' conflict with a spam filter that I was using. The
standard advice on the OnSpeed site for such cases is to disable the offending program. Not a constructive approach - to say
the least - so I hope that the relevant instructions will be changed soon.

More significantly, the problem persisted even when I
switched off the OnSpeed application on my PC; in the end I had to remove the program to get the spam filter working again. I expect that this fault can be resolved, but clearly there are issues in this area that need to be addressed.

The software is easy to install, and is available for Mac
as well as Windows PCs. On the whole the service is surprisingly
good, and a lot cheaper than broadband. Unlike other 'speed-up'
techniques that tweak your computer's settings but result in
little noticeable improvement, OnSpeed really works.

I can recommend OnSpeed for dial-up users who can't justify the
expense of broadband, or who are not located close enough to a
suitable exchange. OnSpeed is also stated to be great for mobile
or PDA users, as GPRS (wireless) speeds can be boosted by as much
as 8 times. It even helps with broadband if you can only get a
reduced service in your area.

My overall rating is 4/5 - very good, but the email support needs
to be improved.

If you want further details of OnSpeed, please visit http://www.On-Speed.net. There is a 14 day money-back
guarantee, so you can try the service without any risk.

Tiscali Wireless Broadband Option

Tiscali have been offering a wireless option to their broadband and TV packages now for about a year, allowing customers greater freedom at home when connecting to the internet. I've many enquiries and questions about wireless which leads me to believe a lot of people out there are confused about wireless broadband. Let's try and sort out a common misconception.

Wireless is not a type of broadband, it is not something 'different', it is just a means of connecting to various devices in the home or work place. All you need is a means of transmitting and receiving the broadband connection, the tiscali wireless options now available, provide you with an ADSL wireless router which gives you the option of wirelessly transmitting your broadband signal through your home.

Some great advantages; there's no need to be within arms length of the telephone socket and no need to have dangerous wires trailing across your home, it liberates you and allows you to place your computers anywhere in the home or office as long as there is a means of wirelessly receiving the broadband signal, which in most cases new laptops and desktop computers come with pre-installed hardware allowing Wi-Fi or wireless connections, if not these wireless adaptors can be bought at a very low cost and can be plugged into a free USB port.

Yes I did say 'computers' you can connect as many as you like anywhere in your home! Well the limit is around 250 wireless connections so I would imagine most people would be more than covered. You can even enjoy broadband in your garden as the range of the wireless connection can extend beyond your bricks and mortar.

Don't let this worry you though, you can very easily configure tiscali wireless broadband with WEP security, a form of encryption that allows only you and your allowed devices on to your wireless network, only you posses the key to your network. In a way, very much like locking the front door behind you. You can even add a few more locks and bolts to your networks 'door' by choosing WPA encryption which changes the password or key on the fly every half hour or so, this is all very easily implemented and comes effectively pre-configured, so the choice of security level is yours.

The Tiscali wireless options come at no extra cost essentially giving you a free ADSL wireless router, even existing customers can upgrade to the option and receive a free wireless router if you agree to renew your contract for a further 12 months, not a bad deal considering these products if purchased in the high street could fetch anywhere in the region of £50 to £80!

So all in all in terms of ease of use and of course price, I highly recommend tiscali wireless broadband when looking for a wireless option to connect to the internet.

Advantages of a Broadband DSL Internet Connection

Anyone who has switched from a dial-up modem to broadband DSL knows the advantages of DSL internet access. The differences between the two are truly astounding. When people begin surfing the internet using broadband DSL after struggling with a dial-up modem, they never want to go back to a slow and often unreliable dial-up connection.

Broadband DSL connection speeds vary, but the average DSL connection rate ranges on average between 128 kilobits per second all the way up to 1.54 megabits per second. Typical dial-up modems can't even come close to reaching typical broadband DSL speeds.

The remarkable speed of broadband DSL has made internet use more convenient, and DSL has improved the quality of many existing online activities such as shopping, banking, downloading audio and video, and gaming. Besides a notable increase in connection speed and website navigation, with broadband DSL, internet users are always connected to the world wide web. DSL provides valuable information and online activities that remain just a few keystrokes away.

Broadband DSL saves money as well as valuable time. Broadband DSL eliminates the need for additional phone lines. People using broadband DSL are able to talk on the phone while browsing the net, and all computers within a household can surf the web independently with the use of wireless routers.

Security is another plus for broadband DSL users. Broadband DSL subscribers use their own private telephone lines to make contact with their DSL service provider. Cables and lines are not shared by other internet subscribers, and therefore user access is private and very secure.

Broadband DSL is constantly improving as new technology is discovered and implemented. When considering the cost of broadband DSL versus the cost of dial-up, there is no comparison. The benefits of broadband DSL are immeasurable. Broadband DSL is truly the solution for businesses and consumers wanting quick and reliable internet connectivity.

Is Cheap Broadband About to Go the Way of Cheap Petrol, Chea...

In the past, European competition laws restricted BT's stranglehold on telephone line access throughout the UK. There was a process known as LLU, or 'local-loop unbundling', which permitted companies to establish their own equipment in BT exchanges, paying BT part of the line rental they collected.

The outcome of this was cheaper broadband deals and lower costs all round.

Final link

Broadband providers pay to access the final link between the local exchange and your telephone, the property of BT.
These are the costs which Ofcom has mooted could increase and which will most likely be carried by the consumer.
Yes, the poor old consumer may well be hit just where it hurts most - yet again.

A few of the cheap broadband providers have been angered by this decision as they feel the second-rate service they get from BT's wholesale division, Openreach, doesn't justify the additional price increase.

TalkTalk, undoubtedly the UK's cheapest broadband provider, has probably been the most vocal in this regard and claims that allowing Openreach to increase costs would be damaging to competition and a backward step.

If a provider such as TalkTalk is concerned about it, does this really mean that the end of cheap broadband is on the cards?
Who will be bitten by higher broadband costs?

On the positive side, there are possibly a few ways of avoiding these price increases.

Firstly, if your broadband access is via cable, from Virgin Media broadband for instance, you will definitely not be affected as cable broadband services run independently of BT's telecoms network.

That's an unusual bit of good news for Virgin Media customers then!

Secondly, if you live where there are no LLU services - such as in rural areas where TalkTalk, Tiscali and others haven't seen the financial rewards in modifying your exchange yet - prices will remain the same.

Location, therefore, is all important.

It seems that price caps will only be removed in areas where competition is sufficiently robust, for instance, where there are a number of broadband providers in the same area all vying for customers.

Thirdly, you are not likely to be affected by any price increases if you are in the middle of a 12 or 18 month contract and the initial terms and conditions should continue to apply.

But, a warning - be on the look out for any amendments which your broadband provider may email to you.

Why Make Online Videos?

With the abundance of broadband in people houses these days videos have become very easy to view as can be seen by the success of sites like youtube.com and others. The old saying a picture says a thousand words can apply to a video where a single video can maybe say ten thousand words! People make online videos for many reasons but the base idea is that video is a better communicator that test, images or sound on their own.

We are very visual creatures, we love to see things and the more we can relate to something the easier it is to take that information in. If you want to use videos on the web you can use it to explain complex concepts and to advertise products and services in a much more visceral way. Nothing captures a person's interest like a moving picture even if they were not looking for it in the first place.

Not only are online videos effective at communicating things they are proven to be effective by the sheer number of site that use videos no0w and the massive amounts of advertising tat uses a video medium to sell things which must produce results or advertisers would not invest in such things.

So if you are considering if you should make online videos for whatever purpose remember what television did to the world after radio and books and think about how this will apply to the internet. It is the next step of digital evolution; do you want to catch that wave?

If you recognize that online videos are the next big thing but are not sure how to make, produce and host such things click below to find the complete solutions to your online video needs.

Work Online Home Business - Tips to Start Your Own Internet...

Many people are intrigued by the idea of working on an online home business. However, most people do not know how to get started. Broadband internet connection is very common nowadays, however, making money from the web is still a fairly unique subject. This is because internet marketing is not being tough in schools or colleges. Anyone who wants to start an online business would have to do their own research. This article will provide some information on how to make money from the web.

There are many ways to generate an income stream from the web. The most popular one is through affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is an online business model that works on a mutual understanding between a merchant and its marketing agent. Companies in general are good at finding a particular demand and creating a product or solution to fill it. Sometimes, the companies are not very proficient in selling their own products. This is where the online affiliates come in.

Affiliates are like marketing agents for a merchant. They are not the employee of the company but rather a business partner. The main duty of affiliates is to go into a particular market and ramp up the interest level for the merchant product. The affiliate will bring prospective customers to the merchant checkout page and when a sale is made, the affiliate will earn their commission.

The idea of working on a home online business is not complicated. All you have to do is to locate a good merchant that has an affiliate program and register your details. When your application has been approved, you will be given an affiliate ID. The ID is for sales tracking and commission pay out purposes. Just like in any conventional enterprise, in order to grow your business you would have to acquire new skills. Luckily, most of these skills can be learnt from internet marketing teachers. What you will need is your inner drive and the willingness to learn.

If you have bought more than 3 books on the subject of Work Online Home Business and still aren't getting the results you would like, maybe you realize there are some things you just cannot learn from reading a book! Like riding a bicycle...how to kiss... Internet marketing are always easier to learn with the guidance of a teacher or coach. Poor UK Broadband Speeds - Actual Speeds Less Than Those Adv...

In the UK, many broadband comparison websites are now offering speed test or speed checker services. This is in response to a number of reports by the national press that confirm that almost all broadband internet users experience much slower download speeds than those advertised by broadband providers.

It is worth mentioning that download speeds can be restricted both by the users own computer speed and by the speed of the server that is sending the file. However, for the purposes of this article we will assume that both those factors are optimal, and concentrate on broadband speed meaning the speed of the connection provided to the user or consumer.

In general, the download speed advertised by a broadband provider is the maximum download speed theoretically available somewhere on their network. The actual speed experienced depends on the hardware in the telephone exchange, the distance between the exchange and the physical location of the user and the quality of the line between the exchange and user. It is therefore no surprise that a study by consumer magazine Which? last year showed that users on an 8Mbps download speed broadband service experience an average speed of 2Mbps.
Broadband download speeds are never going to be constant for UK consumers. Too many factors play a part, including the number of other people using the service and therefore also the time of day. So the question then becomes, how should broadband providers fairly advertise their download speeds? Consumers ability and desire to switch between broadband providers is what keeps the marketplace competitive and improves quality of service in the long run, so I'm not about to propose that broadband providers start advertising solely with the minimum download speeds that users experience. However, more information needs to be given to the consumer.

Ofcom introduced a voluntary code in June 2008 under which broadband providers must tell give potential customers an accurate estimate of the maximum speed that their phone or cable line can support. However, this is only relevant when the customer is already speaking to a sales team or placing an order on a website. So changes need to be made in the print and television advertising by broadband providers, and it would be much more effective as a requirement by Ofcom rather than a voluntary code. One suggestion is to require them to publish next to a maximum line speed some sort of independent average download speed experienced by their users. There is no reason for the maximum line speed to be removed because that is also what the consumer is paying for, but consumers shouldn't be switching to another faster broadband provider only to find that the actual speeds are the same or less than their old provider.

The purpose of advertising broadband in the UK using average rather than maximum download speeds is that broadband providers would have to compete based on the actual quality of service given to their customers rather than theoretical ability or customer service. At a time when the government is asking BT to improve the broadband speeds in the UK, this is something that the consumers really want to see done.

DialToSave Broadband is a service from DialToSave allowing a full comparison of broadband packages offered by broadband providers in the UK for home, business and mobile users. It allows home users to search by postcode for broadband providers that actually service their local area and also has a broadband speed test so that users can determine the actual upload and download speeds of their internet connection, whether or not it is a broadband connection.

No more questionable quality and misunderstood conversations since it offers clear conversation no matter whom we call. Possessing a computer with high speed internet ingress and a telephone, we just can combine these facilities to make a call. The old impractical perception of making telephone calls over the television cable is now a history. And, absolutely an industry standard now it is. Thanks to broadband phone adapter, now we could avail our old phone to place calls over our broadband internet connection. The number of adapter required is depends on how many telephones we have.

Broadband phone or internet phone permits users to actuate their internet links instead of the ordinary landline to make calls. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) translates the voice into digital packets and transmits it over the internet and these are translated back into analog signals before outstretch the receiver at the other end. This technology is availing equipment sometimes just a n ordinary phone to connect to the internet and transfer calls over the broadband connection enabled by your computer. This service will save you a great amount of money by transferring your calls to your computer and saving that charges out of your phone bill. Wireless Broadband - Hassle Free High-Speed Internet

In the present scenario, the internet is the most sought after way to communicate with the world. It connects you in more than one way, such as you can chat with your friends. Moreover, you can connect through Emailing and can also avail the latest information. Broadband gives you high speed connectivity and the wireless broadband enables you to use the internet anywhere and without any hassle.

The word wireless broadband is defined to be accessing the Internet wirelessly and gaining the high bandwidth speed on your personal computer. And one more thing to get the wireless broadband is involving with the correct digital hardware for accessing the internet. Such hardware can be easily connected with any PDAs, or any laptops computer.

In fact, wireless broadband is running on the source of using the short-range radio waves to generate a tiny area, where your computers can work without any ineffectual wire. You can gain the wireless broadband by stopping into a wireless router. There should be a little, economical computer that does zero but should act as only the center of your network. Then you can fit wireless cards into each one of your computers, either by opening them up and putting it inside or by plugging it in using a cable such as USB or a port. Basically the wireless broadband has carried a great revolution in the market.

When you put in the card and turn up your computer and the router on, Windows will explain you a box and asking you, which wireless network you want to connect to. That means the router will repeatedly create a network. All you need to do is only choosing the exact network and you are on the Internet. And the wireless broadband access is usually no slower than plugging the modem in directly, unless you have very cheap wireless equipment and a very fast internet connection. How To Build A Global Brand

One of the most exciting efficiencies in business is the Global Brand. A global brand allows tremendous economies of scale, especially in marketing communications investments. However, these economies of scale can only be achieved, if brand impact is not sacrificed in the process.

Doesn’t this seem to be a contradiction in terms? How can Brand, which is typically optimized for a specific market and a specific offering be implemented across widely different countries and work equally hard for all of the markets and for all of the offerings?

After all, countries are different. They have different histories and cultures. So a brand that is designed for one country may is typically not suitable for another. Is it at all possible to overcome this problem? How do we build a global brand without making it unsuitable for some markets?

Yes. It is possible. It requires a great deal more discipline, both for developing the brand positioning architecture that is suitable for all countries, and for developing the brand design elements and brand communications in each country for each product offering. Let us make it difficult, by developing a global positioning for a brand that is associated with such different product offerings in different countries, and support it with brand design elements and brand communications that can harness local cultural idioms.

The foundation of a global brand positioning must penetrate below all the layers of cultural differences to foundational human values and aspirations. Every global brand architecture has four levels of thrust.

1. The deepest level of thrust is the human (as opposed to local) motivation that can be addressed by the offering. Let me take an example of a global brand in an up-to-date product category – telecommunications – AT&T. Let’s say we have wireline consumer services, wireless consumer services, and business broadband services. Here’s the crux. We must seek the greatest common human motivation that all telecommuni-cations, even all three kinds of telecommunications, can address. We have to leave the product and begin with the customer, whether individuals, or institutions. The greatest single motivation for both individual and institutional telecommunications customers in our time – is to get ahead in a highly competitive environment. Individuals need to get ahead for their own livelihood, because in today’s world, to not advance is to fall back and fall by the wayside. So the deepest level thrust is the most powerful customer benefit, of HELPING CUSTOMERS GET AHEAD.

We call this the strategic customer benefit. Note: it is a customer benefit, NOT a product benefit. Telecommunications, even different kinds of telecommunications, perform a critical function toward getting ahead. We live in a networked reality. Almost everything is accomplished through different people and functions working together toward common goals with information flowing among them. Reliable telecommunications is critical toward getting or delivering more such information sooner – either from those who have it – or to those who need it, respectively. Getting the right information sooner, or delivering the right instruction sooner, are perhaps the most important functions toward getting ahead, whether one is an individual or an institution. This is a universally true and powerful benefit, and can be addressed by all the three kinds of telecommunications product offerings.

2. The second of the four layers of a global brand positioning architecture is the strategic product benefit that contributes most to the strategic customer benefit. In the case of telecommunications, this is clearly reliability. This is because where there is little or no reliability, the information necessary to get ahead is less likely to be received or delivered, thus compromising performance, and endangering the ability to get ahead. Of course, it is not enough to just claim reliability. The actual telecommunications technology must be reliable; or at least reliable enough keep lost communication of important information down to a minimum. Again, even at this layer, it doesn’t matter whether the product is one kind of telecommunications or another. What is critical is that whatever kind of telecommunications is available, it must actually become reliable, even if it may not yet be fully reliable. As in the case of the deepest layer of customer-motivation based benefit, the second deepest layer of product benefit is also true in all the countries where the company operates.

3. The third of the four layers of a global brand positioning architecture is the actual functional technology that makes the strategic product benefit possible, and may be called the strategic product support. In the case of consumer wireline services, the technology may be a superior fiber network, in the case of consumer wireless, the technology may be a superior switch, and in the case of institutional broadband services, the technology may be superior customer service. Regardless of which country may have one or more of these different telecommunications technologies they will each support the very same strategic product benefit, which in turn will support the very same strategic customer benefit.

4. The last of the four layers of a global brand positioning architecture is the attribute that is most uniquely compelling, and which cannot be used by competing telecommunications services. In the case of AT&T, this might be the “global leader in telecommunications”, or something to that effect, that supports the three deeper layers of the positioning architecture in a way that both stands apart, and does so in a way that is unique to this brand of telecommunications.

Together these four layers of the global brand positioning work together but differently in each country, without being inconsistent anywhere, either vertically in chains of causality, or horizontally, in terms of the specific kinds of products being offered in each country.

Of course, the brand name and design elements must be consistent with the brand character of world leader in telecommunications. However, the actual content and design of all communications, whether in advertising, brochures, or website, will use idioms and situations that based on the local culture, while staying consistent with the global positioning and brand design.

This is how a global brand can be an exquisitely crafted conceptual structure. The language, the metaphors and the situations used in the brand communications may be unique in each market, but the brand positioning architecture, the brand design elements and the brand character remains the same across the world.

WiMax & the Cellular Establishment

There was understandable consternation in cellular ranks during February 2007's 3GSM conference in Barcelona when the august Arun Sarin warned his brethren WiMax could usurp their business. Unforgivably frank, he also mentioned the impending obsolescence of the 3G standard in the wake of a WiMax onslaught.

Why the warning and how imminent a threat? For that we should speak to Gary Forsee, Sarin's peer at Sprint. But we can't. They sacked him early this year.

Sprint's 2.5GHz WiMax pilots were up and running in Washington DC and Chicago when I paid a visit in December 2007. Aligned with Sprint and literally housed in their basement were Intel, Samsung, Motorola and Nokia helping make it happen by providing technology, base stations and the all important handhelds at acceptable price points.

This collective magic allowed me to surf, download mail and use Skype over a direct, non-GPRS access to the Internet while being driven from Northern Virginia to DC at 60mph. All on a Samsung handheld device the size of a Blackberry which by the way would be first of many casualties from the mobile Internet this new service heralds. Okay, not the first if we count Gary Forsee.

A victim of the Wall Street kindergarten, Gary couldn't survive their helter-skelter. If WiMax works, what happens to Sprint's existing 3G voice and data service? If it doesn't, what happens to the investment? Well it worked and looking at what did happen to Sprint's 3G service and to the unfortunate CEO, Sarin arguably wasn't crying wolf after all.

A possible flaw in the Vodafone Taipan's argument and generally in cellular thought processes stems from an assumed implacability built in the WiMax-Cellular standoff. Technological omnivores like Nokia help foster antagonism by working hard with Sprint to make WiMax happen while drawing a different rainbow for the rest that begins at 3G, arches past HSPA (cleans whiter than HSDPA) and ends at 120Mps over something called LTE.

The real power of LTE is its awesome speed, its WiMax-like OFDMA air interface and the fact it doesn't exist. These characteristics ensure its use to browbeat WiMax beatniks (match that speed, you Commies) and protect cellular walled gardens from the mobile Internet's depredations at least until 2010 when LTE supposedly delivers what WiMax does today.

The implacability is of course a myth. Gary Forsee would perhaps still be seated on leathered upholstery in Kansas City if suppliers resident in his basement embedded IEEE 208.21 compliant Media Independent Handover (MIH) functionality into their equipment.

MIH would allow multi-radio handsets roam between Sprint's CDMA and WiMax networks. As an ex-Sprint employee, I shall always wonder why that didn't happen. After all cutting edge is not new to Sprint. And Intel was there, cooped up in the basement with the rest. They man the 802.21 outpost for IEEE.

Intel has pole position in championing multi-radio environments. A world with MIH-enabled Laptops and handheld devices merrily hopping between WiFi, WiMax and cellular footprints while John Lennon looks down and smiles. I for one believe it can happen. The cellular establishment doesn't.

The Malaysian authorities recently asked cellular operators to relinquish any and all 2.5GHZ spectrum they'd held for around 5 years with nothing to show for it. Hoarding WiMax spectrum allows a cellular operator to play with it for silly use, dabble while showing earnest intent and ensure a Gary Forsee doesn't happen to its CEO.

IN September 2006 India's TRAI proposed releasing licensed spectrum for wireless broadband. Unique to our country however, the Regulator proposes while Government disposes. To see how others do it right check out the teeth in America's FCC, Hong Kong's OFTA or the British OFTL.

Allowing a fox to guard the hen-house, DoT followed TRAI's recommendation by announcing cellular operators alone be permitted to bid for WiMax spectrum. While there were subsequent announcements grudgingly deigning bidding rights to Class "A" ISPs, intent and nexus are clear and so is the fate of an Indian mobile Internet. The fact we are nearing a second anniversary of TRAI's recommendations with broadband penetration still a joke suggests all's well with the cellular establishment.

Curb The Cost Of Telephoning With Voip Technology

Revolutionizing the telecommunication system, VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol) has given the leverage to make long distance calls and talk hour after hour without being worried about the high bills. This technology has made it possible to make overseas calls at local rates and at the same time enjoy better voice clarity. Simply access to the Internet is enough to avail the advantage of this technology.

The way VoIP technology works is very simple. It uses broadband connection to make and receive voice calls. That is why this type of phoning system is known as broadband phone. This technology converts the speaker’s voice into digital signal and transmits it over the Internet. The signal is then converted back to voice before it reaches the desired destination. The voice does not lose its clarity if the Internet speed is up to the market. However, poor Internet speed may affect the quality of VoIP service.

The main benefit of VoIP is to keep the cost of telephoning low. As mentioned earlier, it facilitates you to make long distance calls at local rate. Besides that it provides certain features like call waiting, call diverting, caller ID etc. free of cost. What more, you can even help your family and friends who are residing in some other countries pay less while making you calls. For that all you have to do is to choose a virtual number. Whoever will make a call to this number will have to pay at the rate of local calls only.

Since, VoIP phones use broadband Internet to transmit digital signal, high speed Internet connection is a must to take advantage of this technology. Better quality service can be ensured from this technology if the Internet speed is of that mark. It may not work when there is power outage or no Internet connection. So, installing a backup power supply will be a good idea to enjoy uninterrupted VoIP service.

UK Broadband Speed Factors and Comparisons

UK broadband speed varies widely across the country. The differences are based upon the location, type of broadband and the service providers, themselves. Speed is based upon connection, download and upload of information. Speed also varies based upon individual factors. All the factors come together to help give a rough estimate of the overall UK broadband speed.

The following list explains all of the factors that goes into the final result of broadband speed.

- Type of Broadband. There are numerous types of broadband connections. ADSL and cable are the fastest. Other types like satellite are slower, but still faster than dial up. Even at the slowest rate broadband is still at least 10 times faster than dial up connections.

- Service provider. Some service providers can supply higher speeds. This can be due to better technology, equipment or location. Each provider will list their tops speeds for subscribers to see and this is an easy way for a person to ensure they are getting the best speed possible.

- Web Traffic. The internet is often referred to as the information highway. The reason for this is that all the information online travels through lines that work much like an actual highway. When there are a lot of people online these lines get crowded and the internet runs slower than usual. These times are referred to as peak hours. Peak hours usually occur after 7 am until 9 pm on weekdays and all weekend.

- Hardware. Hardware a person uses, from modems to cables can effect the internet speed. If a person is using outdated or damaged hardware then this will effect the efficiency and in the end, the speed of the connection.

- Personal computer. It is up to the individual to make sure that they keep their computer running smoothly. Each person should make sure that they clean their web browsers history, temporary files and cookies on a regular basis. This helps the computer to be able to work quicker. Also older computers do not have as much memory and therefore need to be cleaned more often so the internet can run quickly.

These four factors all come together to make broadband speed hard to pinpoint. One location could get greatly different results than another simply because of the varying factors.

When looking at UK broadband access speeds and all the factors that can effect them it is easy to see why it providers can not guarantee a speed. Many providers give a range of speed where the connection speed will fall. Most users will rarely, if ever, get the top speeds, due to the factors above. Even someone will the best equipment, location and service may not see the top speeds because some factors, like web traffic, can not be controlled by anyone.

Broadband Internet Does It Save Time And Money?

The Internet is full of information treasures. Millions of people from across the globe use the web to access information or some service. This ongoing and ever rising demand for Internet access brings us into focusing on the quality of web service you have to connect to the Internet. In the beginning the only way to access the web was through a standard dialup 56K modem connection. Not only was it slow, but it also prevented you from using your telephone as well. However, that was a time when people had no other choice to reach the World Wide Web. Do you remember those awful days?

Then came along Broadband Internet. It made its entry as a one-stop solution to these long delays in getting a page loaded or submitting a form and the lost or missed phone calls while browsing on the web. Not only does it work with your existing phone line, but also provided a download rate as much as ten times faster than in a dialup connection. Also with Broadband Internet you have the advantage to leave your PC connected to the web forever – or as long as you wish. The bottom line is that such chances of frequent disconnections became eliminated almost completely. This could have never been done with dialup, trying to stay connected was always the biggest problem that I could remember.

Actually, broadband was initially introduced as a faster means for download and surfing. But the wide bandwidth enabled the broadband service providers to offer more facilities and features a conventional phone cannot imagine to provide even at a higher cost. Now an Internet user can download movies and songs in less time, read a quick article on a newspaper, or have a video chat with someone a thousand miles away. Also, for broadband users, if they want to take advantage of the VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol), it is possible to make long distance phone calls at a much lower rate than a conventional international dialer service.

From the foregoing, it is clear that the best mode of Internet access possible at present is through a broadband connection. It is fast, less taxing and cost effective, when weighing its pros and cons. That is, whether you get it for business purposes or personal use, the benefits a broadband connection could provide can easily cover the initial investments made in the matter of few months. So do I think that having broadband is worth the cost every month? You bet I do. Yes it might be a little bit more costly than dialup, but the headaches of dialups are of the past.
However, the choice lies upon the Internet user. Do you want to catch the current wave of fast communication or waste precious time with those slow dialups? It’s your choice!

Introduction to ADSL Broadband

Does ADSL mean for all of broadband and how does it actually work? If this is the thing you are looking for then you shall need to be more acquainted with ADSL.

ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line), a type of DSL, uses the existing copper-wired telephone networks for high-speed broadband internet. Using ADSL technology it is generally 10 - 140 times faster internet surfing than of standard 56k dial-up internet.

Difference between ADSL and SDSL SDSL is another kind of DSL, where the uploading speed is much faster than download speed. This technology of internet is widely preferred only by large business houses whereas ADSL is the choice of home users.

ADSL Speed This technology can run at up to 8Mbps speed and the most popular services in the UK are of 512Kbps speed. People also favor 2Mbps speed ADSL broadband and it mainly depends on their need of higher speed.

ADSL in UK A broad number of Internet Service Provides offer ADSL services in UK who actually resell the services obtained from network operators such as British Telecommunications (BT) and Kingston Communications. So if you need ADSL service you need these network operators in your place and around 90% of the UK is covered to have ADSL.

Availability of ADSL broadband This mostly depends on the telephone exchange near to you and your distance from it. Old exchanges are not suitable for ADSL and exchanges that are upgraded are only capable of transmitting ADSL signals, and so your local exchange should be an upgraded one.

Another important aspect for having an ADSL is the distance between your house and the exchange, which have significant effect on the ADSL speed. The distance away you are from the telephone exchange is the lesser in quality of the ADSL broadband. So, if you are long away from your exchange living in a rural area, it is better to favor 512 kbps broadband that does not have much impact of distance.

Billing in ADSL Broadband You can pay for your broadband service either monthly or yearly. You can choose the either that depends on your need and further plans. Most providers offer you the modem for free with the package if not you will need to rent it.

ADSL Installation In general, ADSL installations are so easy that you can install it by yourself and these services are available as self-install or plug and play. You need to connect your modem to your PC and to the sockets on the micro filter.

Installing the drivers and software provided with the modem are next and entering your username / password to login to broadband will be next final. Being a broadband user you will then sure have an extraordinary surfing experience over the internet.

You can find a cheap broadband ADSL provider in your area who provide fast broadband internet access by shopping around on the internet for best broadband deals. Most ADSL providers provide discounts to buy online.

Africa To Invest Heavily In Broadband

Africa is set to invest heavily in broadband, with the cumulative investment in ADSL and wireless broadband infrastructure expected to reach US$1.1 billion by 2011. This investment excludes customer equipment costs, says African ICT research house a BMI-TechKnowledge.

"These investment figures exclude investments that GSM and fixed line operators are expected to make in their core networks for the provision of voice and other data services, which will also be leveraged to provide broadband data services," says Richard Hurst, a BMI-T analyst and co-author of the report.

Stephane Tchies, who co-authored the report with Hurst says in general, wireless technologies will dominate broadband connections in Africa, resulting in increased uptake of wireless broadband services.

This is because many African countries traditionally have low penetration of fixed line infrastructure and wireless networks are more cost effective and faster to roll out.

"We expect telecoms operators to prefer investing in wireless technologies because they are significantly cheaper,” she says.

Crystal-balling 2011

The report says the number of broadband connections, both fixed and wireless will reach over 7 million by 2011, with DSL subscribers accounting for close to 3.7 million.

By 2011, dial-up connections will dramatically drop from the current base of 76% to 17%, while DSL grows from 26% to 43% of the broadband market share, he says.

Fixed wireless broadband connections (using technologies such as iBurst) will also see a big leap, going from 2% to 18%. Cellular connections will grow from 2% to 21% she says.

Basic Internet access and the ability to deliver voice services will be the driving force of the uptake of broadband services in Africa, Tchies says.

Tchiees adds that North Africa is expected to benefit considerably from the increased uptake of broadband, while the sub-Saharan markets are expected to remain the same due to the current lack of international capacity, Tchies says.

“In North Africa we are seeing a healthy uptake of services with Morocco reporting 350,000 ADSL subscribers and Egypt 150,000 while the rest of the continent broadband is starting to gain traction," she says.

South Africa also expects to see quantum leap in broadband adoption by 2010, when the country will host the 2010 FIFA World Cup Soccer.

Currently, there are five undersea cable projects in various stages of development in the African continent. The cable projects are to provide addo provide additional bandwidth to African countries, ensuring cheaper access to bandwidth.

Cheaper Broadband: How to Find the Broadband Deal which Suit...

With new ISP providers entering the market every day, the prices to get a high speed connection are falling. With so many to choose from, how do you decide broadband supplier offers the right package for you?

Connection Speed - How fast?

Be a little bit weary of broadband deals advertising "up to 8mb" connection etc. It may not mean that you will get the speed they advertise. The speed you will be able to get depends on your local exchange and what your line is capable of. So always check the availability before you sign on the dotted line.
Download Limits – The "Unlimited broadband" myth

Many ISPs advertise "Unlimited Broadband" as their unique selling point. Even these so called "Unlimited" download limits do have fair usage policies (usually not well advertised, like most small print). If you use your broadband internet connection just to browse internet, check emails and do some shopping, you may not need a huge download limit or an unlimited deal for which you have to pay more. One of the common impacts of advertising these days is to make you believe that you need something which in fact, may not be true. So know what download limit you need and do not end up paying over the odds because of seeing a flashy advertisement from an internet service provider.

Know your rights

Most of the products you buy online, including your broadband connection will be subject to some cooling off period. Even if you sign up to a one year contract, you may still be able to cancel within, say 14 days or so depending on local regulations.

Compare prices and read consumer reviews

Broadband providers keep changing their offers all the time. If you have seen an advertisement somewhere, whether it is TV or media, do not presume that you will get the same offer. Always check the latest prices when you sign up. You can read what other peoples experiences are with the Internet service providers using broadband provider comparison sites.

Last, but not least, consider looking for a latest deal every time you renew your contract. There is a good chance that you might find a better ISP than your current one.

Every time you change your broadband contract, you might find it useful to Compare Broadband Supplier offers and read Broadband ISP reviews before you sign up for your connection.

Wireless Broadband Basics

Wireless broadband is a general term used for the technology that is able to gain access to the internet wirelessly, and at high bandwidth speeds. Wireless broadband is available on virtually any digital device, so long as it has the proper connectivity hardware. Such hardware can easily be attached to most PDAs and laptop computers.

One of the most popular and well known wireless technology standards is Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity), which allows users to access the internet over a wireless Local Area Network. The speed and range of Wi-Fi, however, is severely limited. There is another wireless connectivity standard, called WiMAX, which is considerably more advanced.

WiMAX is a protocol by which signals are sent to wireless broadband users. A WiMAX base station can theoretically beam a signal as far as 50km (31 miles), meaning that a single station could potentially cover an entire city (unlike Wi-Fi, which is only available in "hotspots").

Although WiMAX are networks are available in several major metropolitan areas in the US, base stations are very expensive to build, and aren’t cost effective in less densely populated areas. Because of this limitation, WiMAX technology is not yet available in most non-urban regions.

Although WiMAX has been a major technological achievement, wireless broadband certainly doesn’t stop there. There are a number of other cutting edge wireless protocols currently in development. The most notable of these is a new protocol called xMax, which is similar to WiMAX, but a lot more efficient. It can cover a broader range at a lower cost, by piggybacking on radio frequencies. Although xMax is not yet available to the public, it will most likely be launched within the next couple of years.

Broadband Boosts The Independent Film Industry

Today Movie hosting is becoming a very user-friendly part of the Internet. It is now very common to see a whole host of sites showing people's videos for a sample of their memories, as well as the now popular 'viral' or mini-clip genre. With the intervention of Broadband speeds, streaming video over the web has never been easier to access and control.

Many successful movie-hosting sites exist today on the internet. The top few boast successes culminating in hundreds of amateur and professional movies being streamed to home PCs daily such as youtube.com, the most recently successful online movie host. After just a short time in the online movie hosting business, youtube.com has grown into an internet business giant. So what does this mean for the filmmaker? Well, it is simple really; the purpose of making movies is to reach an audience, here lies the power of the web through sites like youtube.com hosting video riding on the back of high-speed broadband. The budget market is specifically targeted as more filmmakers, amateur and professional, shoot short movies. These are anything from as little as a minute to maybe twenty-five minutes in length so the chances of traditional distribution are fiercely competitive.

Online movie production and distribution for commercial fiction and non-fiction is huge on the internet. Filmmakers are discovering broadband video streaming as a powerful ally in achieving that all-important recognition for their work. With the big dogs like Fox and DreamWorks lending themselves to multi-million dollar budgets, the past has seen much talent pushed to one side through lack of funding. The infrastructure created from inward investment for powerful streaming platforms and huge reduction in streaming video costs have paved the way for the lower budget independent filmmaker, although, many movie production companies remain close to traditional distribution methods fearing the effect on DVD annual revenue. The fear that sales will drop as a result of online distribution keeps many producers away.

So who else is actively involved in online movie production work? Well, in the UK, two prime examples are BBC's Screen Gems and Channel 4's 'Four docs', short films up to 4 minutes in length. These are just a couple of innovations in the genre of movie distribution providing the converging TV and Internet industries. Actually, the list is almost exhaustive. There is the exciting iFilm.com site, which reaches a worldwide distribution of film fanatics. While scrolling across the internet, looking for evidence of online hosting, many sites emerged helping filmmakers showcase their movies. One of the other biggest players is atomfilms.com who performs competitions and also offers promotional services to distributors at film festivals on an annual basis.

The power of broadband internet shows its weight by being able to connect filmmakers across the world. The internet allows movies from independent filmmakers around the world to be seen on web pages. This gives them the ability to share their work with a broader audience. Utilising Movie hosts, filmmakers use the internet as a weapon to submit their work to many people on a worldwide level. A movie hosting company's goals are pretty standardised - present a forum where the filmmaking community can come closer together. Therein, filmmakers showcase movies with fellow enthusiasts and thus beginning the first steps in front of the needed movie production industry contacts. The filmmaker presents movie ideas directly and can talk to people with the same energy and constructively criticize their movies in online forums.

The current standard player on computers is the RealPlayer Realmedia.com. The other two major players are QuickTime, which is the Apple standard for playback of movies and the Microsoft windows media player. Most web surfers have these players installed ready for video streaming. Playing audio and video files across the global digital networks is now very familiar to most people. There are technical constraints affecting the standard, the main ones being the internet speed and latency (time taken for data to be sent from the server to the user's pc). This will result in either very sharp quality video playback or jittery 'no quality' playback.

Filmmakers perform networking by attending film festivals and actively engaging in online filmmaking forums. The goal is to bring the filmmakers in the filmmaking community closer together so that they can share ideas and present their work to a wide audience - the World Wide Web. Thus this creates a great place to learn and promote film making at its best.

What To Look For In DSL Service Providers

Thank goodness for the Internet! How did we ever get along without it? The answer to that is simple: very slowly. Over the last decade, the World Wide Web has evolved to provide more access to more people all over the planet. As with every global expansion, it has presented all kinds of business opportunities for those looking for a piece of virtual pie. With so many DSL service providers in competition, how do you know which one to chose?
You need to speak the lingo. There's a lot of jargon involved in technology. You have to understand what everything means so you can ask intelligent questions and make informed decisions. Part of what makes the process ridiculously complicated is that it's common for various terms to be used for the same technology or equipment. The word broadband refers to technology that allows more than one channel to transmit over a single wire, as opposed to dial-up which only lets on channel on the wire at a time. Sometimes this word is used interchangeably with DSL. A modem is a box that converts the signal, either digital or analog, into something your computer can understand. There are different kinds of modems with different features: broadband, cable, wireless and dial-up.

DSL stands for digital subscriber line, referring to the fact that it used a phone line to transfer digital data. Unlike ancient dial-up connections, DSL will allow digital information and voice waves to travel over the same phone line at the same time, so there's no need for the telephone to be tied up by the computer, and an intrusive phone call won't knock you offline. Telephones and computers can coexist peacefully in the same home. DSL will only work over a limited distance, so it may not be possible to get that kind of service in a small town or rural community. Before you get too deep into your research, you had better contact your phone company to make sure that DSL is available in your area.

Your phone company may suggest some possible DLS providers that are active where you live. Of course, the first thing most people look at is the price. The cost of service typically doesn't vary all that much. If you do stumble upon a provided that is significantly less than the others find out what's wrong with them. Do they not offer any kind of customer service? No help with installation? Remember, you usually get what you pay for.
Once you've got a short list, evaluate which ISPs or internet service providers they work with. Also, most companies will want you to sign an agreement or a contract. Very similar to what you would enter into with a cell phone company. Most people would rather shoot for a short (typically a minimum of one year) contract. That way your options are as open as possible and you won't be locked in for too long. However, if you're confident in your choice, there are usually discounts and other perks offered to those who sign on for longer.

You will most likely be some new equipment involved, usually a router (modem) and some software installation. Check to make sure if you are buying the equipment or renting it. Will someone be coming to your home to set things up, or will that be your responsibility? If you're not so techno savvy, look for a provider with 24-hour support. The deciding factor should be the amount of service and support you get for the price. You can visit http://www.dsl-service-providers-guide.com to learn more about broadband internet.

Besides freeing up your telephone line, the biggest draw if DSL is speed. You want to ask about the rate of both downloads and uploads to help make your decision.

Broadband - Your Questions Answered

Do you remember using the Internet back when you had to dial in using a modem? First you dialled, then you listened to screeching noises, and then, if you were lucky, you were connected at a snail’s pace. Worse, it was impractical to leave the connection on all the time, as it would drop out at random and have to redial every time you restarted the machine.

If you’re unlucky enough to still be using dial-up Internet access, I feel for you. Why not come and join us in the age of broadband? Broadband is revolutionary, always-on, much faster Internet access, letting you download much larger files and use the Internet whenever you want, with no waiting. If you’ve been put off broadband because you think it’s expensive, think again – the remaining dial-up ISPs like AOL are charging just as much for dial-up access as you would pay for broadband.

The biggest problem many new broadband users have, though, is confusion over what kind of broadband they should get. With that in mind, here’s a basic rundown.

DSL broadband is the most common kind. It is broadband that works over a normal phone line, as long as the telephone exchange is DSL-enabled, and can be bought either from your existing phone provider or from a dedicated ISP.

Another common kind of broadband is cable. Instead of buying it from your phone supplier, you get it from your cable TV supplier, often as part of a package deal. If you already have cable, this can be a better option for you, as it is often cheaper and faster than DSL.

Finally, if you’re stuck out in the middle of nowhere without a DSL-enabled line and with no local cable company, you should consider satellite broadband. Satellite broadband is a clever way of accessing the Internet using a normal dial-up connection to send things but a satellite to download them. While it’s not cheap and suffers in the speed stakes, it is much better than sticking with dial-up.
